Leave Verification and Authorization Protocol
The following four-stage process is required under Army Regulation 600-8-10 and DoD Instruction 1327.06. Failing to follow any stage may lead to denial of leave and possible disciplinary action under the UCMJ.
Chain-of-Command Endorsement
All leave requests must go through the Soldier's direct chain of command. An immediate supervisor or First Sergeant must review and approve the DA Form 31 before any leave is officially authorized. Unauthorized absences fall under UCMJ Article 86 and may lead to non-judicial or judicial punishment.
Travel Logistics and Theater Clearance
Theater-specific travel clearances are required for all overseas (OCONUS) leave. Personnel must submit their APO or FPO mailing address, planned travel routes, and a verified emergency contact. Approved leave must not conflict with mission readiness windows or scheduled training.
American Red Cross Emergency Verification
Emergency leave requests involving a family crisis or medical emergency must be verified through the American Red Cross Hero Care Network (1-877-272-7337), available 24/7. The ARC contacts unit commanders directly to confirm the situation and speed up approval for genuine hardship cases.
Identity Verification and Fraud Prevention
Each application requires a valid DoD ID Number, date of birth, and a verified military mailing address. Submissions are checked against personnel records to prevent fraud. Providing false information is a violation of UCMJ Articles 107 and 134.
